Solar - Filter Most solar pond pumps are designed to create a fountain - if the fountain is disconnected and hose attached to the outlet the water can be fed to a different use (eg, small waterfall, pondside spitter or UVC). BUT Solar pumps tend to be small and light in weight and their small impellers that can get clogged with dirt very easily. Without protection we’ve found they aren’t really suitable at producing a reliable flow for a pond. To use a solar pump for this alternative non-fountain use it is strongly advised that an underwater filter be used. This holds the pump steady in upright position and collects dirt and debris before they reach the pump. Both the above filters need the addition of ballast to keep them submerged.
