In nature this occurs naturally in streams, rivers and lakes. To create our own ‘aquatic universe’ in our own properties we have to rely on electricity to create this movement. As you will no doubt be aware the cost of energy in the UK has increased rapidly in the last 18 months. The current unit rate for people in England, Scotland and Wales paying by direct debit is an average 34p/kWh of electricity, with a standing rate of 46p per day. This is double the price it was back in Oct 2020-Mar 2021 We appreciate this rise in costs is alarming, therefore we think its useful if we provide you an idea of how much it costs to run a pond and that we pass on help and advice to help reduce your bill. Pond Pump Running Costs Your pump is the heartbeat of your pond and it is this element that is the most powerful and expensive to run. Fortunately we have already been working hard over the years on sourcing pumps with low wattage ‘eco’ motors. We have been also focussing and expanding our range of solar pumps that have the benefit of zero running costs. Variable Flow Pumps The most sophisticated variable flow pumps can have their power turned up or down as required. This provides a number of benefits. For instance a waterfall could be increased in force during summer months or to impress visitors whilst the same waterfall could be reduced to a trickle at night-time to reduce noise levels.
